A series of Bach concerts will be held at Kumho Art Hall every Thursday during April
Music fans will get a chance to appreciate music by Johann Sebastian Bach at the Kumho Art Hall in Seoul every Thursday evening for a month in April, as the Kumho Asiana Culture Foundation presents a series of Bach concerts during the month as part of its special event to stage a regular concert on Thursdays.
Violinist Kim Soo-vin will open the series by giving a solo performance on April 2. Under the title of “Kim Soo-vin Meets Bach,” he will perform “Violin Partita No.2 and 3” and “Violin Sonata No.3.” Kim, a winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant Awards, is a member of MIK Ensemble, which he formed along with pianist Kim Jeong-won, cellist Song Young-hoon and violinist Kim Sang-jin.
Stephen Prutsman will follow Kim on April 9. As a pianist who plays all genres of music from classical to jazz and world music, Prutsman will perform not only Bach but also Jean-Philippe Rameau, Ludwig van Beethoven and Claude Debussy, who were influenced by Bach, under the title of “Bach & Forth” named after his new album.
The third performer on April 16 will be Ensemble TIMF, the standing group of the Tongyeong International Music Festival. Consisting of concert master Jeong Ho-jin, violinist Song Eun-young, violist Seo Su-min and cellist Hur Chul, the string quartet will play “The Art of Fugue,” a piece considered to illuminate the richness of Bach’s counterpoint.
After a week-long break, on April 30, Baroque tenor Park Seung-hee and music group Camerata Antiqua Seoul will perform Bach cantatas – both church cantatas such as “Sleepers, Wake” and secular cantatas popular at that time including “Peasant Cantata.”
Tickets cost W20,000-30,000 for adults and W8,000 for students. For more information, call 02-6303-7700.
