The Incheon Asian Games have wrapped up 16 days of competition with the closing ceremony on Saturday evening under the theme “Asia Will Now Remember Incheon.”

In the Asiad where all 45 member countries of the Olympic Council of Asia participated with over 15-thousand athletes and officials, South Korea won a total of 79 gold medals along with 71 silver and 84 bronze.

Although South Korea fell short of achieving its goal of 90 gold medals, it did succeed in coming in at second in the medal ranking for the fifth consecutive time.

China won 151 gold medals to rank at the top, while North Korea won 11 gold to stand 7th in the ranking.

In an unexpected move, Pyongyang sent Hwang Pyong-so, the director of the Korean People's Army General Political Bureau, Choe Ryong-hae, a secretary of the North's ruling Workers' Party, and Kim Yang-gon, the head of the United Front Department of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, to attend Saturday’s closing ceremony. The three highest profile North Korean officials met South Korean Prime Minister Chung Hong-won for about 15 minutes at the venue of the ceremony.

The next Asian Games will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2018.
