2014 Inchoen Asian Games Update

2014-09-22

Korean athletes are simply unstoppable, and they have been so from the very beginning of the 17th Asian Games this weekend, currently ongoing in the South Korean port city of Incheon.

South Korea already has 13 golds, 11 silvers and 10 bronze medals as of 2:30pm Monday – and it’s only Day 4, which goes to show what an exciting and eventful weekend it had been. In fact, South Korea won five gold medals on Saturday alone.

It all started with the first gold medal in Wushu on Saturday, won by Lee Ha-sung for men’s changquan. That was the country’s first Asiad gold medal in the sport since the Busan Games in 2002.

Two of Saturday’s gold medals came from fencing events. Lee Ra-jin upset London Olympic gold medalist Kim Ji-yeon in the women’s sabre individual final, while at an all-Korean final in the men’s epee individual event, Jung Jin-sun beat Park Kyoung-doo to grab the gold.

The cycling teams also earned South Korea a couple of medals. The men’s cycling team beat their Chinese counterpart at the team sprint final, and brought South Korea its first gold in the event at the Asian Games. For the same event, the women’s cycling team also won a silver medal.

Hwang Young-shik, Chung Yoo-yeon and Kim Dong-seon won the gold medals at the team dressage equestrian event, extending South Korea’s Asiad dominance in the discipline for the fifth consecutive time.

On Sunday, teenage shooter Kim Cheong-yong won two gold medals on Sunday, one in the 10-meter air pistol team competition, and another in the 10-meter air pistol individual event. His teammate and three-time Olympic champion Jin Jong-oh earned a bronze medal as well.

Another bronze medal was won by swimmer Park Tae-hwan in the men’s 200 meter freestyle. He’ll be vying for another medal on Tuesday, at the men’s 400 meter freestyle event.

Also on Sunday, South Korean judokas grabbed three gold medals. Joung Da-woon was the first to start the gold streak in Judo in the Incheon Asiad, in the 63 kilogram event. Kim Jae-bum won the gold in the men's under 81 kilogram competition, and Kim Seong-yeon brought home the third judo gold medal of the day, winning her first Asiad title in the women's 70 kilogram final.

The medals kept on coming on Monday. South Korean female team of Kim Jang-mi, Lee Jung-eun and Kwak Jung-hye won gold in the 25-meter pistol event at the Asian Games.

South Korea also grabbed sepaktakraw silver in the men's double event Monday, coming in second only to defending champ Myanmar.
