2014 Incheon Asian Games Update

2014-09-24

Yesterday’s golden moments for South Korea in the 17th Asian Games included those from judo, fencing, badminton and equestrian. In particular, South Korean athletes have been dominating the fencing matches, collecting 6 gold medals already, in just over 4 days. On Tuesday, the gold medals came from the men's epee team and the women's sabre team events.

The team judo competition was introduced at the Asian Games for the first time this year, and the South Korean men’s team took the gold, while the women’s team brought home the silver.

South Korea may have lost to China in the pools, where Park Tae-hwan added another bronze medal to the count in the men’s 400 meter freestyle, but we also saw a dramatic victory in badminton on Tuesday, as the South Korean men's team stunned the favorite China and won the country's first team Asian Games gold since 2002.

Earlier on Wednesday, South Korea grabbed a team gold and an individual bronze in the women's 50-meter rifle prone. One of the trio, Eum Bit-na, also took a bronze medal in the individual shooting.

Jung Mi-ra, another one of the three, burst into tears after winning the gold. As many people know by now, she’s currently battling thyroid cancer, making the win all the more meaningful and emotional.

And just minutes after the female squad claimed the top podium finish in the 50m rifle prone, South Korean men followed suit, grabbing another shooting gold, this time in the men's 25-meter rapid fire pistol.

South Korean rowers are doing quite well as well. Kim Ye-ji added won the country’s second gold in rowing in Asian Games, crossing the finish line before anyone else, in the women’s single scull finals. The first Asian Games rowing gold for Korea was won in 2006.

K: Both men and women did equally well in rowing events as well, the men’s team winning the silver medal in the 2-kilometer quadruple sculls event, and the women’s team doing the same in the coxless pair event.

K: The South Korean men’s swimming team has made it to the finals for the 400-meter freestyle relay. They’ll be swimming with the podium in mind again, at 8:32pm Tuesday night, Korea time.

Before that, don’t forget to catch the baseball match between South Korea and the Chinese Taipei, set to start at 6:30pm. There had been worries that the match may be postponed due to rain, but fortunately, it is now back on.
