2014 Incheon Asian Games Update

South Korean athletes continued a golden streak on Saturday and Sunday, helping their country retain the second spot in the medal tally. On Sunday alone, South Korea bagged 20 medals, including seven gold medals.



South Korean archers dominated again at the Asian Games, sweeping five gold medals, two silvers and one bronze at eight archery events on Saturday and Sunday.



A gold medal came from women’s three-person bowling on Sunday, marking the second gold from the sport.



In women’s individual golf event on Sunday, 18-year-old Park Gyeol brought her country a gold medal. Earlier in the day, Kim Nam-hun finished with an individual silver, while both men’s and women’s teams settled for the silver. In total, South Korea grabbed one gold and three silvers in golf.



A surprise gold medal was won by cyclist Jang Kyung-gu, who took the top spot on the podium in the men’s road race on Sunday. It is the first gold in this event for Korea since the 2002 Busan Asian Games.



South Korea’s baseball team completed Sunday’s golden streak by snatching a 6-3 come-from-behind victory against Taiwan. South Korea has won four of the six Asian Games since baseball was introduced in the Asiad back in 1994.



It is also worth mentioning that South Korea was able to win bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s 20-kilometer race walk. (Kim Hyeon-seop, Jeon Yeong-eun) Athlete Jin Min-seop also took a bronze in pole vault. The result is something to celebrate as Korea is relatively weak in track and field events.



Elsewhere at the Asian Games on Sunday, South Korea’s football team defeated its archrival Japan 1-0 and secured a place in the men’s semifinals. It will play against Thailand on Tuesday.



South Korea’s badminton duo Lee Yong-dae and Yoo Yeon-seong settled for a silver medal in Sunday’s men’s doubles event, although the world number-one duo was the favorite to win.



South Korea pocketed a pair of medals in kayak events earlier on Monday, the tenth day of the Asian Games. One is the bronze from the individual 500-meter kayak event (Lee Sun-ja), and the other is the silver from the women’s Kayak Four 500 meters.



Rhythmic Gymnast Son Yeon-jae returned from the 2014 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Turkey and went straight to Incheon for the Asian Games on Sunday. The Asian Games rhythmic gymnastics events will start on Wednesday.



In a thrilling inter-Korean match, South Korea will take on North Korea in women’s football semifinals on Monday evening.



Currently, South Korea ranks second in the medal tally with 42 gold medals, 49 silvers and 48 bronzes.
