2014 Incheon Asian Games Update

2014-10-01

South Korea added a total of 10 gold medals to its collection on Tuesday, cementing its second place in the medal table of the ongoing Incheon Asian Games. Four of them came from sailing, three from bowling, two from soft tennis and finally one from wrestling.

Bowler Lee Na-young’s Tuesday victory was soon followed by Park Jong-woo, who became the first South Korean bowler to win the men’s all-events title in 36 years. Put together, South Korea has won five gold, one silver and five bronze medals in bowling.

Of the South Korean sailing gold medalist, Park Sung-bin, a 13-year-old skipper, drew attention, becoming the country’s youngest gold medalist by taking the men’s optimist race. Along with four sailing golds, South Korea also bagged one bronze medal.

In wrestling, Jung Ji-hyun won the gold medal in the men's 71kg Greco-Roman event. This was the first Asian Games gold for Jung, who won the 2004 Olympic gold in the 60kg event. In Asian Games, he had previously won a silver medal back in 2010.

Another very exciting medal news came from the athletics field on Tuesday. South Korean Lim Eun-ji picked up the bronze in the women's pole vault, bringing the host country its first Asian Games medal in the event.

Also on Tuesday, South Korea defeated Thailand 2-0 in the football semifinals, after North Korea beat Iraq 1-0 on the other side of the bracket. The two Koreas will meet for the men's football gold for the first time since 1978 in Bangkok. The score at the time was a tie at 0-0, and the two Koreas shared the gold medal without going to penalties after ending regulation and extra periods. The exciting inter-Korean match will start at 8pm on Thursday.

Meanwhile, South Korea also made it to the finals in women's volleyball with an easy 3-0 win over Japan. It will meet China for the second consecutive Asian Games match and will have a chance to avenge the 3-2 loss in Guangzhou four years ago.

Several more South Korea vs. Japan matches are scheduled for Wednesday. The two sides will battle for the gold in women’s handball at 6pm today, and again, this is a chance for them to avenge the 28-29 loss at Guangzhou.

Both men and women’s basketball teams will face off with Team Japan in their respective semifinal matches today as well. The women’s match will start at 5:30pm, and the men’s at 7:45pm.

Also don’t forget to catch the South Korean Taekwondo athletes and rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae in action in their pursuits for the gold.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, South Korean Park Chil-seong won the silver medal in the men’s 50km race walk. Not only was it his first Asian Games medal, but it was also the country’s first silver medal in the discipline.
