2014 Incheon Asian Games Report

2014-10-02

South Korea picked up 8 more gold medals on Wednesday, including three in Taekwondo, in the ongoing Incheon Asian Games.

In the host country’s national sport, Kim So-hui snatched the gold for the women's under-46kg division, while Lee Ah-reum grabbed the gold in the women's under-57kg division. From the men’s side, Jo Chol-ho won the gold medal in the men's over-87kg division.

Two golds came from the wrestling ring, where Rhy Han-su triumphed the men’s 66kg class, and Kim Hyeon-woo added another gold to the list in the men’s 75kg division. With the victory, Kim became the third South Korean to complete the Asian "grand slam" of wrestling. He also has under his belt one world title, three Asian championships and one Olympic gold medal.

South Korean soft tennis players continued to do well. The mixed doubles team brought home the third gold medal in soft tennis yesterday. The women’s hockey team also defeated team China on Wednesday, and brought home the gold.

Meanwhile, South Korea won its tickets to the finals in both the men's and women's basketball at the Asian Games on Wednesday, both fought against Japan. The men’s basketball team will face off with Iran in the finals scheduled for 6:15pm Friday, while the women’s team will battle with team China for the gold medal, at 6:15pm Thursday!

Another notable achievement by South Korean athletes on Wednesday included the first-ever Asian Games silver medal in the rhythmic gymnastics team competition, led by the star gymnast Son Yeon-jae. She also finished first in the qualifying for the individual all-round finals set for Thursday. It starts at 6pm, so don’t miss it!

Also on Wednesday, a rather rare scene was seen at Munhak Stadium, where the North Korean women’s football team faced off with Japan. North Korea won the match 3-1 and bagged the gold, but what was unusual about it all was that there were hundreds of South Korean fans were there cheering for the North Korean players.

The South-North Korean Joint Cheering Team was made up of South Korean civic activists, and they were also joined by dozens of officials from the North Korean delegation.

The North Korean players thanked the South Korean spectators, some visibly teary-eyed. North Korea beat South Korea in women’s football in the semis, and South Korea went on to win the bronze medal for the sport.
