N. Korea Fires 2 Short-range Projectiles Toward East Sea on Wed.
2014-07-09 Updated.

North Korea fired two short-range projectiles toward the East Sea early Wednesday.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the North fired one projectile from Hwanghae Province at 4 a.m. and another at 4:20 a.m. into the East Sea.

The JCS said the projectiles are presumed to be Scud missiles and have a range of around 500 kilometers. It said the North fired the missiles without informing civilian flights or vessels of their planned action.

The JCS added it is the first time the North has fired missiles from the western part of the country toward the East Sea since 2000, possibly intending to show it is capable of firing missiles anywhere.

Wednesday's launches also mark the 13th time North Korea has fired projectiles this year.

The military has stepped up its monitoring against more missile launches.
