N. Korea Fires Three Short-Range Projectiles Off East Coast
2014-09-06 Updated.

North Korea fired three short-range projectiles off its east coast early on Saturday. The projectiles were presumed to be part of their latest weaponry.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North fired the three projectiles between 7 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. on Saturday from Wonsan in a northeasterly direction. It added the projectiles fell into the East Sea after flying about 210 kilometers.

The Joint Chief of Staff said the South Korean military is preparing for any possible additional launches.

A South Korean military official said the projectiles that had been fired previously from August 14 to September 1 were a newer model of tactical missiles. The official said considering the trajectory and firing range, Saturday's projectiles are also seen to be part of the new missile line.

Another military source said the new missiles were likely to be an improved version of the North's KN-02 missiles which have a firing range of 170 kilometers. The source said the North was likely firing the new missiles to test their capabilities.

North Korea has launched projectiles on more than 19 different occasions this year, firing 300 millimeter artillery, scud missiles, Rodong and Frog rockets as well as the new tactical missiles from February. The total number of projectiles the North fired this year stands at 111.
