North Korea is lobbying the UN special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea as the UN is moving toward referring the North's human rights crimes to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The Associated Press reported that UN Special Rapporteur Marzuki Darusman met with a councilor from North Korea's Geneva office on Wednesday.
It is the second time that Darusman has met North Korean officials since Monday. The meetings with the North Korean officials this week are the first since the special rapporteur's office was created ten years ago.
Pyongyang has repeatedly denied visits by the special rapporteur to the North, but said it will allow Darusman to visit if the UN eliminates the referral to the ICC from a UN resolution which is expected to be adopted next month.
Darusman said he will meet with representatives from the European Union and Japan, which drew up the draft resolution, to discuss the deletion.
Japan is said to be unyielding, while the EU is known to be considering making a compromise.
