Washington has warned Pyongyang to refrain from any further threatening actions with regard to a cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment.
U.S. State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said Monday that Washington regards threats to U.S. citizens and companies as a serious matter. She said if North Korea wants to help address the issue, it should admit its culpability and compensate Sony for the damages it has caused.
On Monday, the North dismissed the U.S. accusation that it was behind the cyber attacks related to Sony Pictures Entertainment’s film, “The Interview,” saying such claims were groundless. It warned of strikes against the White House, Pentagon, and all of the U.S.
Meanwhile, major U.S. media outlets, including the New York Times and CNN, reported that the North suffered Internet outages on Monday. They noted that the incident grabbed attention as it occurred after President Barack Obama mentioned over the weekend the possibility of a “proportional response” to the Sony hacking.
Dyn Research, a U.S.-based Internet network monitoring company, said one of the few Internet networks in the North had shown instability since last Thursday and has been completely inactive since Monday.
