US Official: N. Korea Must Pay Price for it to Change its Nuke Policy
2016-01-30 Updated.

A senior U.S. official has said that North Korea needs to pay a price for its nuclear development in order for there to be a change in its policy.

Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation Thomas Countryman made the remark in a news conference over the phone on Thursday.

He said that without question, efforts made by the United States and its partners have slowed down both the nuclear and ballistic missile program in North Korea, but not to a complete halt.

During the briefing, Countryman also explained the results of the Mid-level Political Meeting among member nations of the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative(PSI) held in Washington on Wednesday.

The assistant secretary said the PSI meeting, attended by some 70 countries including host country U.S. and South Korea, especially touched on the North Korea issue.

He said that member states reaffirmed the importance of using the PSI and all other global cooperative systems to prevent the transfer of weapons of mass destruction technology to North Korea.
