China, Russia Ready to Implement UN Sanctions But Oppose THAAD
2016-03-12 Updated.

Russia and China say they are ready to implement the latest UN sanctions on North Korea but clearly expressed their opposition to a U.S. missile defense shield deployment on the Korean Peninsula.

At a joint news conference in Moscow Friday, the foreign ministers of China and Russia supported denuclearizing the peninsula, saying they cannot acknowledge North Korea's nuclear arms possession.

The two countries also said the UN Security Council sanctions resolution on the North is fair and they are ready to implement the punitive measures.

Both sides also urged Pyongyang to return to denuclearization negotiations, and they vowed joint efforts to resume the six-party dialogue.

China in particular called for talks on a peace treaty held side by side with denuclearization efforts.

However, Beijing and Moscow said the situation on the Korean Peninsula should not be used as an excuse of a military buildup in the region and expressed clear opposition to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense or THAAD missile defense system on the peninsula.

The two countries also stressed that separate sanctions imposed by individual countries must not lead to North Korea's complete isolation or hinder prospects of restarting the six-way nuclear dialogue.
