Military Cannot Confirm Report of North's Missing Sub
2016-03-12 Updated.

The South Korean military says it cannot confirm the report by several U.S. media outlets on a North Korean submarine said to be missing.

An official from the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Saturday that the military cannot verify the report because it is an intelligence matter.

The military is known to be closely monitoring the North's move while sharing intelligence on the issue with the U.S.

Earlier on Saturday, CNN cited three U.S. officials familiar with the latest information as saying that the North Korean regime lost contact with one of its submarines earlier this week.

The report said that U.S. military had been observing the submarine operate off North Korea's east coast when the vessel suddenly stopped.

CNN also reported that U.S. military equipment, including spy satellites, aircraft and ships have been secretly watching the North Korean navy as it searched for its missing submarine.

According to CNN, the officials said the U.S. thinks the missing vessel suffered some type of failure during an exercise, but it is not sure whether it has sunk or is still adrift under the water.

Meanwhile, U.S. Fox News quoted a U.S. official as describing the submarine as a diesel powered 21-meter Yono class "midget" sub that has a crew of two, with room for a squad. Fox News also said that North Korea has not looked to the United States for assistance with its search and rescue efforts.
