Darusman to Be Replaced by Argentine Human Rights Lawyer
2016-07-01 Updated.

Former UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of Myanmar Tomas Ojea Quintana has been nominated as the next UN special rapporteur on North Korean human rights.

According to the UN on Friday, UN Human Rights Council(UNHRC) chair Choi Kyong-lim sent a letter to the UN office in Geneva, in which he recommended Ojea Quintana as the new UN Special Rapporteur on North Korea.

Ojea Quintana will be officially appointed for the post on the final day of the UNHRC’s general meeting on Friday.

In March, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights(OHCHR) launched efforts to recruit a replacement for Marzuki Darusman, who recently finished his six-year term.

Eight people, including Ojea Quintana, applied for the job, which has a term of one to six years.

Ojea Quintana, a human rights lawyer from Argentina, has worked in the field of human rights for more than 14 years.
