'N. Korea Ready to Conduct Another Test at Portal 3 at Punggye-ri Test Site'
2016-09-12 Updated.

Multiple government sources in South Korea said on Monday that North Korea appears to have completed preparations for another nuclear test at an unused portal at the Punggye-ri nuclear test facility in North Hamgyong Province.

The North announced last Friday that it conducted a fifth nuclear test and said it would take steps to enhance its nuclear force.

Military and intelligence authorities of South Korea and the United States consider the announcement as an advance notice of another nuclear test within this year.

Defense Minister Han Min-koo also told the parliamentary defense committee last Friday that North Korea is believed to be ready to conduct another nuclear test at an unused portal at the test site, adding that South Korean and U.S. militaries are closely monitoring activities around the facility.

The North carried out its first nuclear test at Portal one in 2006 and conducted its second, third and fourth tests at Portal two in 2009, 2013 and 2016. The latest test was conducted 400 to 500 meters from the site of the fourth test.
