IMO to Adopt Statement Condemning N. Korea's Missile Launches
2016-11-25 Updated.

The International Maritime Organization(IMO) will adopt a statement denouncing North Korea for its continuous ballistic missile launches conducted without prior notice.

The London-based body kicked off a regular Maritime Safety Committee(MSC) meeting on Monday. On Tuesday, it discussed a circular containing the denouncement of the North and is expected to adopt the document on Friday.

A Seoul official said the IMO distributed the circular to member countries a few months ago and no country has yet to raise any objection over its content.

The document states that the North has not given prior notice before launching 37 missiles this year so far, noting that it constitutes a violation of the Safety of Life at Sea(SOLAS) treaty.

In the circular, the IMO also criticizes the North for posing a threat to the safety of ships passing around the Korean Peninsula with its GPS jamming activity between March and May.

It is the first time the IMO members will adopt an official joint statement condemning the North over its missile firings carried out without advance notice, although the body has issued a warning in the past.
