Profile |
Vice Premier Kwak Pom-gi is a technocrat and machinery expert.
From his humble beginnings as a machine factory manager in 1983, he
rose to first deputy chief and chief of the machinery bureau of the
Korean Workers’ Party in the 1990s. In 1993, he was named a cadre
candidate of the party’s Central Committee and in 1998 became vice
premier. In the late 1990s, he often represented the North in economic
negotiations with Nigeria. In 2000 in Pyongyang, he met with Yun Jong-yong,
vice chairman of South Korea’s Samsung Group, and two years later
attended the grounding-breaking ceremony for the construction of inter-Korean
railways in the North Korean border city of Kaesong. |
