Profile |
Ri Myong-su has filled a number of key military positions in his
ascent up the ranks, and enjoys the solid trust of North Korean leader
Kim Jong-il. Ri often accompanies Kim to inspect military bases and
as the People’s Army’s chief strategist, he is the control tower of
the North’s military planning.
In 1980, Lee was named director of the Revolutionary Victory Memorial,
followed by promotions to lieutenant general in 1992, head of the
3rd Corps in 1993 and colonel general in 1995. He was made deputy
chief of staff of the People’s Army in 1996 and chief military strategist
and general in 2000.
During the 2002 visit of South Korean special envoy Lim Dong-won to
Pyongyang, Ri briefed Lim on Kim Jong-il’s proposal to build an inter-Korean
railways via connection of the Donghae Line. |
