Ri Myong-jae was one of the late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung’s
closest aides. He has a wealth of experience in propaganda and media
from his past work experience. In 1984, he was named deputy chief
of the secretariat of the Korean Workers’ Party.
In 1958, he began working for the Korea Central News Agency as an
editor and was later promoted to chief of the domestic news desk.
He got to know Kim Jong-il from 1972 while working for Chosun Film
Studio as first deputy chief, and has since assisted the North Korean
leader for more than 30 years.
In 1979, Lee took over as supervisor of the party’s film library,
and in 1982, he was appointed deputy chief of the propaganda and agitation
bureau of the party’s Central Committee. Two years later, he was moved
to the committee’s organizational bureau and also served as Kim’s
chief secretary. In 1992, he was appointed party secretary to the
mission in France. In 1994, he returned home and regained his former
positions as deputy chief of the organizational bureau and Kim’s chief
secretary.
A man with a delicate build, Ri is rumored to have gone to the North’s
office in France for medical treatment. |
