Jang Jae-on is a clergyman who is deeply involved in inter-Korean
relations.
On the religious front, he was elected in 1989 chairman of the (North)
Korean Catholic Federation. In the same year, he was named vice chairman
of the (North) Korean Religious Leaders’ Federation and chairman five
years later. In 1996, he became president of the (North) Korean Catholic
Churches’ Association.
On inter-Korean relations, Jang in 1994 took part in discussing measures
to abolish the National Security Law of South Korea under his alias,
Je-chol. He also served on the North’s Central Committee of the Pan-Korean
Alliance for Reunification for seven years and was raised to vice
chairman of the group in 1998.
In diplomacy, he was named vice president of an association for friendship
with Japan in 1991. Since 1998, he has headed the Central Committee
of the North’s Red Cross. |
