Profile Hyon Chol-hae was a frequent companion of the late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung in visits to military bases.

A personal bodyguard to Kim from 1950, Hyon was promoted to major general in 1968 and deputy chief of the general political bureau of the People’s Army. For unexplained reasons, however, he was demoted to colonel for a time. In 1970, his rank of major general was restored and he was appointed to political chief of the 4th Corps.

In 1986, he was promoted to lieutenant general and chief of the home front defense bureau of the People’s Armed Forces Ministry. In 1991, he became a cadre candidate of the Central Committee of the Korean Workers’ Party and cadre two years later. He was promoted to colonel general in 1992 and general in 1995, in addition to deputy organizational chief of the People’s Army’s political bureau. Since 2003, he has served as the bureau’s senior deputy chief.
