Almost 50% Aged Between 50 and 64 Prefer Burial Cremation

A survey finds that about half of the nation’s semi-aged population between 50 and 64 prefer to be cremated when they pass away.

The results of the poll conducted by Statistics Korea released Monday showed that that 46-and-a-half percent of the aging respondents said they want to to be cremated with the remains buried in nature.

Of those older than 65, classified as aged, 28 percent chose the cremation option, while 35 percent preferred burial without cremation.

Among the semi-aged, over 47 percent said they had plans for asset donation in the future while the figure for the aged was just 24 percent. About 30 percent of the semi-aged said they would consider donating at least part of their assets instead of leaving their fortune to heirs. Just about 16 percent of the aged said the same.

Currently, one out of eight South Koreans is over 65, but one out of five Koreans will be over 65 by 2026 under the current again trend of the population.
