Monthly Tutoring Costs for Elementary School Students at 370,000 Won (332 USD)

A survey finds that 63 percent of South Korean parents of elementary school children feel burdened by high expenses of private education taking place outside of school curriculum.

According to the Korea Consumer Agency’s poll of some three thousand parents, 74 percent said that the cost of sending children to private after-school academies account for over ten percent of their monthly income.

The monthly costs of private education per student stood at 370-thousand won, or approximately 332 U.S. dollars.

The most popular subject for private tutoring was English, followed by math and music.

Some 40 percent of the poll respondents said that their children started receiving private tutoring before entering elementary schools, while 25 percent started when entering elementary schools.

With much time spent on receiving tutoring, a majority of elementary school students had an average of two to three hours of leisure time a day.
