Han Kang, Kim Ae-ran Nominated for German Literary Award

South Korean female writers Han Kang and Kim Ae-ran have been nominated for a literary award given by a German organization.

Litprom, which honors works by female writers from Asia, Africa and South America through its Liberaturpreis prize, announced eight candidates for this year's award, including Han's "Human Acts" and Kim's "My Palpitating Life".

Writers whose works have been included in the organization's quarterly recommendation are automatically named candidates, and both Han’s and Kim's works were recommended last year.

Kim is noted for winning the Yi Sang Literary Award for "The Future of Silence" in 2013, and Han won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016 for "Vegetarian".

Since 2016, the winner of the Liberaturpreis award has been decided by a popular vote online. A week-long voting period for this year's prize began last Friday on the Litprom Web site and will close this Thursday at midnight, German time.

The winner, who will be awarded three-thousand Euros, or three-point-seven-five million won, and receive an invite to an award ceremony at this year's Frankfurt Book Fair, will be announced in June.
