Funeral to be Held for Yoo Byung-un, De Facto Owner of Sewol Ferry

The funeral has started for Yoo Byung-un, former chairman of Semo Group and head of the family that owned the holding company that ran the Sewol ferry. The funeral is being held on Saturday at Geumsuwon, the headquarters of the pseudo-religion Yoo had founded.

Dressed in black suits and white shirts, Yoo's followers were seen at the front gates of Geumsuwon, located in Anseong, checking passengers in cars passing through while no crowds were seen near the headquarters.

No media have been allowed to enter Geumsuwon, and the cult has threatened to take legal action against any media shooting the event from the sky via helicopters or helicams.

Former spokesperson for the sect, Cho Kye-woong, had sent a text message to reporters ahead of the event, requesting coverage of the funeral be kept from becoming too excessive.

Mourners will be allowed to enter Geumsuwon for one day before the burial takes place at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Yoo's body will be laid to rest on a hill located inside Geumsuwon.

Meanwhile, four of Yoo's family members who were temporarily released from detention to attend the funeral, including Yoo's eldest son Dae-kyoon, are required to return to a corrections facility in Incheon by 8 p.m. on Sunday.
