Memorial Event Held to Mark 200th Day Since Sewol Ferry Sinking

An event has been held in the city of Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, to mark the 200th day since the Sewol ferry capsized in waters off the coast of Jindo Island, killing some 300 people.

The event was held late Wednesday at a park near a memorial altar set up for the victims of the ferry sinking amid the participation of the victims’ families and civic groups.

Jeon In-sook, a mother of one of the high school students who died in the ferry tragedy, read a letter to her daughter at the event. She urged for efforts to be made so that South Korea will become a safe nation that will never again experience such deep grief.

Some 500 residents attended the event which included a performance by a community choir and an informative skit on a bill aimed at thoroughly investigating the maritime tragedy.
