Rights Groups Fight Discrimination Against HIV/AIDS Sufferers

Human rights groups have filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission of Korea as a local hospital refused to perform a surgery on a patient who was HIV-positive.

The "Solidarity for HIV/AIDS Human Rights - Nanuri" and the "Korea Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS" claimed Tuesday that an HIV-positive person was denied a surgery for an ear infection at a general hospital in Wonju, Gangwon Province in August.

The patient is said to have received the surgery at another hospital early this month.

The groups said that even state-designated hospitals offering consultations for people who have contracted the virus are rejecting surgery for them, calling on the government to produce fundamental measures to improve medical services for people living with HIV/AIDS.
