The Ministry of Justice has named lawyers who will cover all one-thousand-400 rural districts in South Korea under a new system introduced to help residents in the countryside to properly access legal services.

The so-called village lawyer system allows people in rural areas to get preliminary legal consultations through phone calls, fax and email from lawyers who volunteer to provide free legal services.

The ministry said the lawyers participating in the system have tripled to one-thousand-455 since the system was introduced one and a half years ago, while the villages covered by the lawyers have surged seven times to one-thousand-412.

The ministry said the country has about 20-thousand lawyers, but more than 80 percent of them are in the capital area, so people in other parts of the nation have not been able to properly access legal services.

The ministry held a ceremony to appoint the lawyers and a symposium on the village lawyer system Friday.
