Gov't to Remain on Alert By Year-End for Possible Nuke Accidents

Amid lingering concerns of a cyber attack on the nation's nuclear facilities, the government and the nation’s nuclear plant operator will maintain its heightened alert level until the end of this year.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) said Friday they plan to operate the emergency response system until the year's end although the threat of a Christmas cyber attack appears to have expired.
Instead of maintaining its emergency staff in full until Saturday morning as planned, the government said it will flexibly operate an emergency workforce starting from Friday evening through the end of the year.
The ministry and the KHNP have been on alert since December 24 after a self-proclaimed anti-nuclear power group demanded the government halt operation of some reactors for three months while warning of another attack.
The anti-nuclear group has released 85 internal documents from KHNP since last Monday, claiming it hacked into the power plant operator's networks.
