The Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling of nine years in prison against former representative Lee Seok-ki of the now-disbanded Unified Progressive Party for violating the National Security Law.

The court on Thursday confirmed the lower court ruling which had acquitted the former legislator of charges that he had plotted an armed rebellion against the government in the event of an inter-Korean war, but found him guilty of instigating members to stage the rebellion and for violating the National Security Law.

The Suwon District Court had earlier found Lee guilty of all charges and had sentenced him to 12 years in prison and a ten-year ban on serving in parliament. But the Seoul High Court had acquitted Lee of conspiring to overthrow the government and lowered his sentence to nine years behind bars and a seven-year ban on serving in parliament.

Lee was arrested in September 2013 for instigating an armed rebellion.
