Final State Bar Exam under Current Law Taking Place Nationwide

The first test of the nation's 58th state bar exam took place at eleven test sites nationwide Saturday morning.

Some 57-hundred applied for Saturday's test for a 41 to one competition ratio, recording one of the highest ratios in history.

According to the current law, the state-administered exam is to finish by 2017. So, this could be the very last bar exam to take place, explaining the high competition rate.

The Justice Ministry had announced it will postpone its plan to abolish the bar exam by four more years, but the situation is unclear due to lackluster discussions on revising the National Bar Examination Act in parliament.

South Korea first introduced a system to select judicial officers in 1947, and the system has been modified over the years. Since 1963, the current bar exam has been held for over 50 years.

However, the government has been decreasing in phases the number of lawyers selected through the bar exam since a U.S.-style law school system was adopted in 2007.
