Seoul Pushes Hanseong Baekje Area to Become UNESCO Site

Seoul city officials have vowed to push for the designation of a first-century historic area in eastern Seoul as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Seoul officials said on Monday that they will this week recruit an academic organization that will examine the Hanseong Baekje era land for ten months and propose specific sites as possible UNESCO sites and ways to preserve the sites.

With an aim to have the area registered as a UNESCO site by 2020, city officials created a committee in order to meet the goal. Officials have also held talks with Seoul citizens on the objective.

Seoul officials said that if all goes as planned, the historic area is expected to be named to South Korea’s tentative list of world heritage sites in the first half of 2017, nominated as a potential heritage site in 2018 and registered as a world heritage site by 2020.

The ruins of the ancient kingdom of Hanseong Baekje, including the Pungnaptoseong Fortresses and ancient tombs, are considered the starting point of the history of the capital Seoul.
