No. of Malaria Patients in S. Korea Increasing

The number of malaria patients in South Korea has been rapidly on the rise in recent years.

According to Gyeonggi Province and the country's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday, the number of malaria cases in South Korea steadily decreased from about 22-hundred in 2007, 820 in 2011 and to 450 in 2013.

But the trend reversed, rising to 638 in 2014 and 699 in 2015. This year, 156 cases were so far reported as of Tuesday.

The government suspects that the rise is attributed to suspended inter-Korean joint quarantine activities in the border area amid strained cross-border relations.

Gyeonggi Province provided North Korea with medicine, equipment and vehicles for quarantine operations from 2008 unti 2011, but the support was suspended since 2012.
