No. of Foreign Prisoners in S. Korea Increases

The number of foreigners in South Korean correctional facilities increased one-point-seven times over the past five years.

According to Justice Ministry data submitted to the National Assembly, there were a total of 57-thousand-302 prisoners in correctional institutions nationwide as of July, about two thousand of whom were foreigners.

The number of foreign prisoners represents a one-point-seven fold increase from about 12-hundred in 2011.

Convicts accounted for 56 percent, while prisoners on trial took up 44 percent.

Sixty-seven percent of the foreign prisoners are Chinese, while four-point-eight percent are Thai citizens.

Representative Keum Tae-sup of the main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea, who requested the data, said that the number of foreign prisoners is steadily increasing as the number of foreigners staying in South Korea topped two million, which is about four percent of the South Korean population.

He called on the government to produce measures to deal with crimes committed by foreigners and enhance the capabilities needed by law enforcement officials in order for them to crack down on these crimes.
