2 Umbrella Labor Unions to Stage Joint Rally Against Merit-Based Pay

South Korea's two umbrella labor unions will jointly stage a large-scale rally in Seoul on Thursday in protest of the government’s push to expand the implementation of a performance-based salary system.

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions(FKTU) have agreed to hold a demonstration at Yeouido Park at 4 p.m. to express their resolve to stage a nationwide general strike.

It is expected that around 50-thousand members of the KCTU and ten-thousand members of FKTU will attend the rally.

The two umbrella union groups said they will make clear their will to stop the expansion of performance-based salaries. They also vowed to utilize the rally as an opportunity to discuss further cooperation measures between the two groups.

The general strike by railway and subway workers also in protest of the merit-based pay system continued for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday as negotiations between the participating unions and the management on Wednesday were known to have failed.
