The Ministry of Public Safety and Security carried out a nationwide earthquake drill Wednesday to promote quake preparedness.
The exercise, which marked the 403rd day of routine civil defense drills, began with an announcement of instructions broadcast through the radio. Then sirens rang and in the three minutes that followed, participants were required to take cover under desks and tables.
Daycare centers, elementary, middle and high schools, local governments and public agencies took part in the 20-minute exercise. They were conducted in at least one location per city and district across the nation.
The ministry said Wednesday's drill was devised to ease public anxiety and train people on how to respond during a tremor, especially in light of powerful quakes that rattled Gyeongju City, North Gyeongsang Province last month.
