Ewha Womans University President Choi Kyung-hee stepped down on Wednesday amid suspicions the school offered preferential treatment to the daughter of a close confidant of President Park Geun-hye.
In a media statement, Choi said she would like to make clear that no preferential treatment was given nor was such a move possible in the admission process and management of academic records.
She stressed the need to strictly and systematically manage classes for students enrolled in sports studies so a similar mishap does not occur again.
The university is suspected of providing various undue privileges to Jeong Yoo-ra, daughter of Park’s long-term confidant Choi Soon-sil, who the opposition camp has described as an influence-wielding figure to the incumbent administration. The school allegedly admitted the daughter to its Department of Kinesiology and Sports Studies unfairly and gave her undue credits.
Choi's decision to step down is said to have come after an emergency committee of the school's professors called for her to resign. Earlier on Monday, Choi held a meeting with students and faculty to provide an explanation for the latest allegations.
