Data: 3rd of Depression Patients Aged Over 65

One out of three patients being treated for depression at South Korean hospitals is a senior citizen.

That's according to new data Friday from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service on Friday.

Records show 680-thousand people received treatment for depression in 2015, up 13 percent from 602-thousand in 2011.

The number of elderly depression patients --- 65 years of age or older ---  has increased an average six-point-four percent each year in the past five years.

Doctors suspect the rapid aging of South Korea's society may worsen the problem, and are calling for improved management of mental illness.
