Victim of Japan's Sexual Slavery to Return Compensation Money

The oldest surviving victim of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery has decided to return compensation she received from Japan through a foundation established under a related agreement between Seoul and Tokyo.

A civic group representing the victims of sexual slavery announced on Monday that 100-year-old Kim Bok-deuk expressed her intent to return 100 million won to Japan and that her family has decided to follow her wishes.

The group urged Japan to halt acts that go against the will of the elderly victims or inflict pain on them and their families.

The South Korean government set up the Reconciliation and Healing Foundation with funds provided by the Japanese government under a 2015 agreement. The foundation offered 100 million won to each surviving victim who agreed to accept the compensation, including Kim.
