Gyeonggi to Administer O+A Type FMD Virus Vaccines

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government will vaccinate all cows in the province’s northern areas against two strains of foot-and-mouth disease(FMD).

Gyeonggi Governor Nam Kyung-pil held an emergency meeting with officials on Thursday, where he directed that "O+A type" vaccines be administered at cow farms in eleven cities and counties.

A total of 130-thousand-874 cows are being bred at three-thousand-633 farms in the northern Gyeonggi areas.

The province has already finished administering O+A type vaccines on 235 cloven-hoofed animals at eleven livestock farms within a ten-kilometer radius from an FMD-hit farm in Yeoncheon County.

The province said it will finish distributing the O+A type vaccines to the northern areas by Sunday.

Nam's order came after the FMD case in Yeoncheon was confirmed to involve the A-strain of the disease, which is different from the O-type virus uncovered in other parts of the country.

The O+A-type vaccine works against both the O-type and A-type viruses.

Since Sunday, four separate FMD cases have been reported at livestock farms nationwide, prompting the government to raise the FMD alert to its highest level for the first time in seven years.
