Gov't to Attempt to Lift Sewol Ferry Wednesday

The government will attempt to lift the sunken Sewol ferry from the ocean floor as early as Wednesday.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said it plans to conduct a trial if weather permits, and immediately start the lift process if the test results are good.

Vice Minister Yoon Hag-bae told reporters at the government complex in Sejong City on Monday that the government will decide whether to conduct the trial lift after checking weather forecasts at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

A Chinese consortium led by Shanghai Salvage, which is in charge of the project, will aim to lift the ship one to two meters off the sea bed using two jack-up barges.

The ministry had planned to try lifting the ship on Sunday, but had to cancel it as the wires connected to the barges were twisted.
