State, Public Universities to Lower College Application Fees

State and public colleges across the country have announced they will lower college application fees just four days after President Moon Jae-in called for such a move to ease students’ financial burden.

The Education Ministry said the nationwide association of presidents of state and public colleges had a meeting with Education Minister Kim Sang-kon Monday morning, and delivered their intention to comply with the government’s request to lower college application fees.

Accordingly, Seoul National University(SNU) and 40 other four-year state and public universities plan to implement lowered fees as early as September eleventh for the next academic term.

State and public colleges charged 33-thousand-92 won in application fees last year, compared with 53-thousand-22 won required by private universities.

A senior education ministry official expects private universities will likely follow suit.
