Poll: More S. Koreans Support Nuclear Armament

A new survey shows that South Koreans supporting the nation's nuclear armament outnumber opponents.

In a Realmeter survey conducted on over 500 adults nationwide on Wednesday, around 54 percent of respondents supported the redeployment of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons or South Korea's development of their own nuclear weapons.

Thirty-five percent opposed such moves.

On the feasibility of nuclear armament, about 50 percent said it was possible while 39 percent saw it as impossible.

Pollster Realmeter said the results can be attributed to the growing sense of a security crisis triggered by North Korea's latest nuclear test versus a sense of helplessness in response.

It said the result also reflects continuing calls for the deployment of tactical nukes in South Korea by politicians both in Seoul and Washington.

People 60 and older had higher rates of supporting the move and viewing it as feasible. Among respondents in their 20s and 40s, more people opposed the deployment and considered it impossible.

The survey had a 95 percent confidence level with a margin of error of plus or minus four-point-four percentage points.
