Gov't to Expand Fire Ant Monitoring Traps to Inland Areas

The government plans to expand monitoring and increase the number of inspectors working to prevent the spread of poisonous stinging fire ants.

Investigators are trying to trace how the venomous insects native to South America came into South Korea.

At a Tuesday meeting, the government resolved to increase monitoring traps not only at sea ports but also inland container bases located in the central city of Uiwang and the southeastern city of Yangsan.

Monitoring traps are currently placed at 22 sea ports across the country in addition to Busan Port where the fire ants were found for the first time last week.
