Probe Launched over Allegations NIS Bought Illegal Phone-tapping Software

The prosecution has launched an investigation into allegations that an employee of the National Intelligence Service purchased illegal phone-tapping software.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office will first summon and question a police official who filed a suit on Wednesday against the employee, who allegedly paid 14 million won for about 60 illegal programs to spy on mobile phones in 2014.

The police official reportedly had started an investigation into the allegations but had to stop at the order of superior authorities.

The prosecution plans to question the official about the intelligence agency employee, the phone-tapping programs and where the programs were purchased.

A probe was also requested for the police official's immediate supervisor, who is a senior official at the National Police Agency.
