Labor Union Holds Rally in Seoul

South Korea's second-largest umbrella labor union held a massive rally in central Seoul calling for labor reforms.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions(KCTU) held the rally at 3 p.m. Sunday on the eve of the 47th anniversary of the death of Jeon Tae-il, the iconic labor activist who set himself on fire and died at age 22 while protesting against inhumane working conditions at small clothing factories in Seoul in the 1970s.
The KCTU that estimated about 50-thousand workers participated in the rally, in which they called on the government to conduct sweeping labor reforms and to guarantee basic labor rights.
They criticized the Moon Jae-in government for lacking efforts to push for labor reforms, pointing out that the government is not responding to their calls for eradicating nonregular workers and legislating to guarantee workers' right to unionize.
