OECD Report Shows S. Korea Needs to Improve Chronic Disease Mgt. Efforts

The Ministry of Health and Welfare has assessed that though South Korea saw its overall health and medical level rise, there is still need for improvement in managing chronic diseases.
The ministry revealed the assessment on Monday after studying the Health at a Glance 2017 report released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD).
The ministry said South Korea’s level of treating myocardial infarctions and strokes had surged.
It cited that in 2015, South Korea’s 30-day case fatality rate of ischemic stroke patients aged 45 or more stood at three-point-nine percent, or lower than the OECD’s average of eight-point-two percent.
However, the ministry also found that South Korea needs more work in terms of chronic disease management.
The ministry said that South Korea’s hospitalization rate of patients with chronic diseases stood at a higher level than the OECD average.
The ministry cited that for every 100-thousand people, the hospitalization rate of asthma patients stood at 94-point-five, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases at 214-point-two and diabetes at 281. Such levels were all higher than the OECD’s average figures, which were at 46-point-seven, 189-point-eight and 137-point-two.
The ministry said the high rate suggests the need for better management of chronic diseases as it shows that people suffering from such diseases got sicker after failing to get good primary care.
