S. Koreans Expected to Live 82.4 Years

Anchor: South Koreans are living longer due to advances in medical science. Babies born last year can expect to live 82-point-four years. However, it’s not all positive. As life expectancy increases, so does the number of days that South Koreans live in poor health.
Kim In-kyung has the details.

Report: South Korean babies born last year can expect to live past the ripe old age of 82.

Statistics Korea said Tuesday that life expectancy at birth for South Koreans was 82-point-four years as of last year.

It was 79-point-three years for boys and 85-point-four years for girls. Compared with ten years ago, boys can expect to live almost four years longer while girls can live three-point-three years longer.

Life expectancy for South Koreans was longer than the average for member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development by one-point-four years for boys and two-point-three years for girls.

The gender gap in life expectancy is also decreasing after hitting a peak of eight-point-six years in 1985.

Meanwhile, 60-year-old South Korean men can expect to live another 22-point-five years while their female contemporaries can expect to live another 27-point-two years.

Compared to their counterparts ten years ago, the life expectancy of both groups has increased by two-point-nine years.

Not all is bright, however. Although South Koreans are living longer due to medical advances, the number of days that they will live in poor health due to diseases or accidents is gaining speed.

Boys and girls born last year are expected to be unhealthy for 14-point-six years and 20-point-two years of their lives respectively. This means they are expected to spend around 20 percent of their lives coping with illness or disability due to accidents.
