Ex-Finance Minister Appears for Questioning over Bribery Charges

Liberty Korea Party heavyweight Choi Kyung-hwan appeared for questioning by prosecutors amid allegations that he pocketed 100 million won in bribes during the Park Geun-hye administration.
The Central District Prosecutors’ Office began grilling Choi from 10 a.m. Wednesday. He is suspected of receiving the money from the National Intelligence Service(NIS) in 2014, when he served as deputy prime minister and finance minister.
Before entering the prosecutors’ office, Choi repeatedly told reporters that he will tell the prosecution the truth and seek to vindicate himself.
Prosecutors obtained testimony from Lee Byung-kee, who was chief of the NIS at the time Choi was finance minister, that he approved the delivery of the money after taking the advice of Lee Hun-soo, a former senior official of the spy agency.
The NIS apparently gave the money to Choi in return for his influence to ensure the agency's “special activities” budget wouldn't be slashed in budget deliberations.
The four-term lawmaker had pushed back his attendance for questioning three times.
